The world’s most widely consumed alcoholic beverage. Is it healthy?
The Round, Round World of Beer Belly
Having such a good time catching up with your mates and just pure uninhibited fun coupled with a big cooler overflowing with booze and really good food. The next thing you know, you are already drinking the whole night away. Yes, drinking with your best dudes is fun. Your drinking sessions become a regular habit. You think nothing is wrong with chugging down your favourite alcohol but maybe you would think twice after seeing yourself in the mirror, looking at that awesome body, and realizing that your washboard six-pack abs are already replaced by a heavy case of beer belly. Scream!
You may be thinking that beer belly is solely caused by beer but that is a complete myth. What causes that fat belly is the amount of calories that you consume by drinking alcohol of any kind (not just beer alone) and by eating unhealthy foods. Let me give you a more concrete example. One bottle of beer has 43 calories. If you downed several bottles plus those not-so-healthy finger foods that you chomp down while drinking, you can just imagine what it does to your body. A shot of whiskey contains 105 calories but of course you would not drink just one shot of it, would you?
Beer bellies grow simply because you consume more calories than you burn. And as more and more calories accumulate in your body, your waistline inflates and you become overweight. According to a health study conducted in 2012, men with larger waist size have more problems relating to urinary and cardiovascular diseases. Another study also found out that 66% of men were blind to the increased risk of stroke caused by obesity. To add to that, excess belly fat can affect sexual activity in many ways. In fact, erectile dysfunction affects one out of 10 men globally.
There are many ways to trim down your beer belly but it is best to start by drinking less alcohol and eating a balanced diet. In this way, you can effectively cut down calories and improve bodily functions. Exercise is also a key factor in losing that unwanted pot belly but in this case, sit ups and crunches will not do the trick. Running, swimming, cycling, and tennis are some of the aerobic exercises that you can engage in to help reduce body fat. Additionally, a certain study discovered that getting rid of beer bellies and losing weight can boost a man’s sex life, particularly those who are in the middle age.
The possibilities of getting rid of beer belly are endless but it is solely dependent upon you to make it work. It is never too late to lose that roundness protruding out of your waistband. All you need is the determination to keep those health risks at bay. Do not caress you beer belly. Do not let it hinder you from being the man that you want to be.
Choose what is more important. Choose you.
